Debut Novel by Blind Author

Debut Novel by Blind Author

Date: 2018-10-19

With over 150 guests in attendance, Tapestry, and Saccharin is Sweet, were launched at the Temple Hall in Mount Edgecombe on 23 September 2018.

Aptly titled Tapestry to evoke kaleidoscopic images of the world, this anthology of original poems by Padmani Dorasamy attempts to depict the diversity of life.

Set mainly in a little, semi-rural village in Mount Edgecombe, Sivalingum Moodley's debut novel, Saccharin is Sweet, spotlights one woman's firm resolve, despite blatant negativity and harsh criticisms, to ensure that her three blind children were educated.

Sivalingum Moodley, whose roots can be traced back to the little village in which the novel is set, is blind. However, despite this, he not only pursued a successful teaching career, and later, a position as Director within the Student Affairs Department at UNISA, but also took to writing academic books. Saccharin is Sweet is, however, his first novel, and hopefully, the precursor to other novels, his second being at an advanced stage of writing.

What is unique and perhaps worthy of note is that Sivalingum Moodley and Padmani Dorasamy are, in fact, brother and sister.

The following are just two selected comments, one per book: "This anthology whispers to the soul with nuances of tender expression. Tapestry is a fascinating collection that approaches the art of poetic expression with clarity and vision." (Renita - Reservoir Hills)

"Saccharin is Sweet is so emotional and so well written, it is a book I could not put down." My husband, after reading it, told me that I should read it because it is so beautiful." (Krishnee Nair from Mount Edgecombe).
