KZN Juniors tee it up for Papwa on Glacier Series
The 13th tournament on this nationwide series celebrates the career of the great Indian golfer, who started as a caddie and went on to beat some of South Africa's greatest golfers, including Harold Henning for the 1963 Natal Open, and then Gary Player for the 1965 Natal Open.
Sewgolum also took his famous reverse grip overseas and won the European Tour's Dutch Open in 1959, 1960 and 1964.
In 1961, Sewgolum made history when he became the first player of colour to compete in the South African Open. And in 1963 he came close to becoming the first player of colour to win the title. He lost by a single shot to Retief Waltman at Durban Country Club.
The Glacier Junior Series features 25 tournaments played around the country, with the winners in each of the A, B and C Divisions qualifying for the National Final later this year. The winner here qualifies for an all-expenses paid trip to compete against some of the world's top juniors in the Orange Bowl Junior Invitational in America, one of the top three junior tournaments in the world.
