The LeaderSHIP

The LeaderSHIP

Date: 2012-10-17
An authoritative framework for building leadership structures and styles for the great journey by Dr Mark Manley.

Durban born Dr Mark Manley has recently launched his long-awaited manual, The LeaderSHIP, which astutely sets out comprehensive ideas about the strength of structure and the impact of leadership style in an authoritative framework subtitled building leadership structures and styles for the great journey.

The manual examines the six critical structural components of leadership and, for the first time, an integration of the four styles of leadership for effective impact in a post-modern world.

Dr Mark Manley has a background in the media, politics, business and ministry. He has hosted many different music, magazine, talk and live programmes on national radio andTV.

"Too many leadership books are about the nice things that leaders should do and be, but here I have tried to formulate the structure and styles of leadership through the ages in a way which will assist any leader to determine how their own leadership ability should be strengthened and how to help other leaders to thrive," he says.

"Leadership is not about fads, it is not about finicky little leadership tricks. Rather it is about strength of structure and the impact of style," says Manley. "The great journey of leadership is life-long and without the right vehicle the journey will be fraught with dangers, mishaps, disasters, unintended consequences and the frustration of devoting our energy and resources to unimportant details."

Shortened from an extensive work to make it more accessible, the LeaderSHIP is written using a nautical theme with reference to the Captain's Log and insights from the Crow's Nest. Dr Manley offer skimmers landing points through the book as he links the idea of a great journey over the oceans of opportunities and dangers, and the obligation of leaders to take the community to a new place.

Dr Manley has led his own consultancy since 1988 specialising in the areas of strategy, leadership and transformation. He consults to large and small businesses, key governmental departments, and international organisations. This involves facilitating high level processes, conference speaking, and conducting seminars.

Dr Manley has consulted internationally (over 30 countries) and his skills are continually sought after in challenging situations. Having worked in war zones (Liberia 1995) and recovering countries (Rwanda 1996) he uses these experiences to enhance his contribution to leaders. Increasingly Dr Manley is in demand as a high level strategist, leadership developer and personal leadership coach.

In his review of The LeaderSHIP, Matthew Knight comments: "Leadership is one of our most scarce and vital natural resources, and ultimately challenging the reader to heed the call to not just lead, but to lead well."

The book is set out to be used with wide margins for notes and thicker paper to prevent ink seepage. It is available through Exclusive Books and most major book-sellers. Recommended selling price is R185.
