TWe Had Arrived

Spier Hotel - Stellenbosch

The crackling fireplace, the crisp white linen, which was changed daily, and the soothing Indonesian styled interior was luxurious, with cotton throws and a wide choice of pillows. The Spier Hotel on the outskirts of Stellenbosch is my hotel of choice from now on, when visiting my son Damian in Stellenbosch.

Waking up to the soothing sound of the Eerste Rivier gurgling right outside my bedroom window, a real sense of privacy and peace is what I experienced when staying at the 'village style' 4-star Spier Hotel.

Our recent five-day excursion to Stellenbosch could not have been more perfect. Each day we planned our activities around our son Damian and his needs. Its fair to say that Spier Hotel was perfectly located just half an hour from the airport and forty five minutes from Cape Town and just ten minutes from my son's digs.

Our room was equipped with a wine fridge, sporting a delicious selection of Spier wines and with their Merlot at just R59 per bottle the evenings were spent in front of the glowing fireplace with a glorious glass of smooth red.

The surrounding orchards and shade trees made the complex and walkways both verdant and private. We enjoyed mouth-watering breakfasts and dinners prepared with only the freshest Cape produce. The views from the restaurant are of the estate and the majestic Helderberg Mountain range.

The seating is comfortable and inviting, and looks out into the garden. The contemporary decor, with comfortable divans sculpted in reds, purples and lime provided an interesting contrast to the original art pieces displayed on the walls. French doors opened out onto the shaded terrace, a perfect spot for relaxing with a sundowner, eating a light meal or browsing through the paper.

At the popular wine bar and terrace, guests can enjoy any one of the selection of award-winning wines, and choose from a clever menu filled with healthy light lunches and bar snacks.

Kulula Airlines are offering specials that work out to under one grand a day per person for car hire, bed and breakfast and flights, making the splendours of the Cape accessible to almost everybody.
