F1 Report

F1 Report

Date: 2013-05-16
It was a dream come true for Spain and her son Fernando Alonso when he gave his nation something to be proud of on Mother's day.

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso drove a dream race to take the top spot on the podium in his homeland Formula 1 Gran Premio de Espa-a 2013 at Barcelona.

After a less than perfect start where Alonso couldn't get past Rosberg in his Mercedes or Vettel in his Infinity Red Bull, he showed his mettle with some brilliant driving skill.

Again tyre strategy played a big part and Ferrari were the first of the leading pack to pit for a tyre change opting for the hard tyres.

Getting past Rosberg's Mercedes was crucial and Alonso pipped him on the thirteenth lap, from there he slid even further down the standings when first Vettel and then Rosberg passed him.

Alonso took the lead on the road on the next lap when Esteban Gutierrez pitted his Sauber Ferrari. Alonso managed his tyres skilfully, changing to mediums on his 21st lap and again on lap 36. Then he opted for 'hards' on the 49th lap and on to the chequered flag.

As it now stands Vettel leads on 89 followed by Raikkonen with 85, Alonso moves up to third on 72. In the constructors championship Infinity Red Bull hold onto first place with 131, Ferrari lies second on 117, Lotus third with 111 and Mercedes has 72.
