Really Get Away

Really Get Away

Author: Tomas Yoko

When you are in the mood to really get away, go somewhere where hardly anyone would recognise you, a place where everything is new and fresh and different, then consider The Pont. Heading South we settled into the leather seats of our ride and I began watching the scenery pass me by. Glad in the knowledge that it was going to change and soon it did. The rolling hills of the South Coast started undulating in synchronicity with the change of mood our play list was producing.

Before I knew it we were there and the Umtamvuna River was looming up ahead of us. We were booked into a chalet in The Pont or The Old Pont as it famously known. The Pont is a very social place, every Friday and Saturday night the bar and entertainment areas of The Pont are under siege as locals and holidaymakers alike descend upon the ice-cold reserves of frothy beer and semi sweet white wine. It was a casual affair we encountered, everyone from miles around had arrived by ten pm and the party that ensued was a festive and enjoyable family affair.

Children grouped into their respective ages and ran around in abundant joy while the teenage set settled a little out of the way. In the morning it was boating time. The Pont has a very user-friendly slipway and boats of all shapes, sizes and types took to the water, laden with the necessary refreshments. As we didn't have our boat with us we ventured out to an activity of a land based nature. Not ten minutes drive away the luscious rolling fairways of San Lameer beckoned to us with a crisp early morning tee off time.

The dew was clinging to the blades of grass with such elegance, reflecting a golden sunrise. We were received at the pro shop with pretty smiles and a very efficient and professional service, before a moment had passed we were in our golf cart and heading into the conservation haven that is San Lameer's eighteen hole championship course. As my ball faded into the trees, I'm sure I startled at least one of the 195 species of bird that live in the splendid manicured garden that is San Lameer. So close to the wildlife were we that my wife, Kasia's ball sent a large male Impala bouncing across the fairway, snorting in disapproval.

It was a fantastic experience, the green keeping was exceptional and the course was fantastic. I will be returning for more soon. With so many places to stay around San Lameer's stunning golf course, it is the ideal place for a getaway game of golf.
