R1.1 Million for a school in Tongaat

R1.1 Million for a school in Tongaat

Date: 2021-06-14

Earlier this month Vivian ready and the team from the Sibaya trust handed over a cheque for Rl .1 mil to the Sarasvati Primary School in Tongaat. This rural school with an enrolment of +- 325 learners serves learners from the impoverished community of Frazers, Burbreeze, Greylands, Khululakweni, Shawula and Magwaveni. The school is a "No Fee School" which means that parents do not pay school fees. Money allocated by the Department of Education is reserved mainly for Learner Teacher Support Material.

The school is 78 years and in a poor condition and all classrooms are unusable. All classroom ceilings have collapsed and had to be removed. The rafters are in dilapidating state and at risk of falling. Chemical toilets are being used for learners as existing toilets are dysfunctional. Many of the learners come from households that receive social grant and many households undergo HIV and AIDS counseling. All the learners are beneficiaries of NSNP feeding scheme which may be the only meal provided, for the day. The school does not have a library or media centre, staffroom and kitchen, the donation will be used to upgrade the school.
