Crawford College North Coast's Drama Evening

Crawford College North Coast's Drama Evening

Date: 2012-11-21
This years' Drama Evening was dedicated to our amazing Deputy Principal in charge of Culture, Rod Steenhuisen. It was held at the Pumpkin Theatre, since our Hall was under construction. It was a sold-out evening that was absolutely fabulous, and our huge thanks go out to the ever-popular Pumpkin Theatre, Danielle and Danny!

The theme for the Evening was "The Mad Hatters' Tea-Party", and it certainly lived up to its name. The tables were strewn with teapots, cups, saucers, jesters' hats and clocks...

Traditionally, every year, the Students take it in their stride to volunteer to Emcee the event, which is done with such flare. This year was no different, as a matter of fact Shannyn Zorab (with a teacup hat), Nicholas Philipson (dressed like a deranged "Mad Hatter") and Odwa Gqwede (sophisticated and dapper in a suit), were the best hosts we have ever had. They kept the audience in stitches and the event rolling along. Filling in any and all blanks with witty banter and educated descriptions of what was "up next".

The evening is always a wonderfully casual and fun event where we pack out the school hall with parents bringing in picnics and wine. This year, the Pumpkin Theatre catered (the food was amazing) and offered a full bar (the parents were happy) allowing our fun but professional atmosphere to continue with the Drama and Arts and Culture students showcasing the "Best" of their work.

Catherine Hampton (Vita Award winning Actress and well-known Durban Actress) was our Adjudicator for the evening. She loved every minute of the Dancing, Performing and Mime that was on show. The students involved, ranged from Grade 8 to Grade 12 and were incredibly professional in their behaviour, both on and off the stage.

The winners from that evening were as follows: JUNIORS: Best Group- Alex Paterimos, Katie Crabtree, Chelsea Richard; Best Script- Emily Crabtree, Chris Knoesen, Nashlin Naidoo, Jess Hill, Katie Crabtree; Best Dance- Limpho Moletsane, Phindi Shandu, Revania Naidoo, Saishna Bakool, Sayuri Chetty; Best Supporting Actor- Keyan Sampson; Best Supporting Actress- Katie Crabtree; Best Actor- Alex Paterimos; Best Actress- Tayla van Heerden.

SENIORS: Best Group- Mime - Shannyn Zorab, Michael Kater, Odwa Gqwede, Reuven Wium, Phumi Shandu, Nick Philipson tie with Play - Kelvin van Wyk & Michael Mackenzie; Best Script- Brittany Hugo & Phumi Shandu; Best Dance- "The Boarders" Towanda Mdletshe, Girlie Lukhele, Lihle Hlatshwayo, Nandi Zulu, Aphiwe Khoza, Sanele Nkambule; Best Supporting Actress- Amy Wright; Best Supporting Actor- Odwa Gqwede; Best Actor- Michael Mackenzie; Best Actress- Phumi Shandu.

The reason for this evening was to showcase the talent and work that the students put in, throughout the year. However, this is also a Charity event - where all the money raised goes to Yada Yah Ministries who then hand it over to "Thokozani's House" - a cause that the Drama and Arts and Culture Department have been involved with for the past three years, and which is very dear to our hearts.

The evening an enormous success! A huge "Thank you" once again, to the Pumpkin Theatre for all their help and kindness with our event. The students absolutely loved it, as did we!
