Sembcorp Siza Water Stream Clean-Up in Celebrating World Environmental Day
The stream runs alongside Sembcorp's Shakaskraal Waste Water Treatment Works. "Sembcorp is committed to ensure that we work in promoting harmony with the environment and to render our services with minimal impact to the environment. We have noticed that the stream is littered with plastic, alien plants, other foreign material and had become silted. This leads to the stream being extremely polluted and blocked thereby having a foul smell. Hence, our drive to clean this stream and we are extremely proud to report that once we had finished a hard day's work the stream was flowing again. The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that it is not our responsibility to protect and save it;" said Sembcorp Siza Water's Managing Director, Shyam Misra.
Approximately 50 bags of waste was collected during the clean-up. We urge the community to use waste bins in the area to minimise the stream from being polluted.
Mrs Di Jones, Chairman of Dolphin Coast Conservancy stated that; "the Dolphin Coast Conservancy's Green Team was delighted to assist with the clearing of a stream in Shakaskraal. The stream in question was very overgrown and silt has therefore backed up to such an extent that regular flooding of adjoining properties occurs. It was extremely rewarding to see the flow of water recommence once the work had been completed and, once the rains start again, the project will really show its value. The team of about 10 workers worked so hard and well together that more was achieved than had originally been envisaged."
Sembcorp urges other corporates to embark on similar projects to protect and save our environment.
