Managing Stress During Exam Times
The period leading up to exams is often fraught with stress and high anxiety. A certain amount of stress is normal but excessive worry, sleep disorders, appetite changes and irritability are all an indication of poor stress management.
Experts believe exam stress can be managed with a balanced lifestyle and sound exam preparation techniques. Good diet, exercise, time management, effective study methods, adequate work space and enough sleep all contribute to alleviating the stress.A good plan is to work solidly through the day - most experts recommend that breaks of 10 minutes every 45 minutes of study - but to also make time to play sport and do light exercise both of which relieve the body and brain. Of critical importance is listening to what your body is saying. Steady yourself if you show signs of wobbling! Calmness is key.
Take a few long, slow, deep breaths and relax your body from toe to top like this: tense your toes and foot as tightly as possible and hold it for a few seconds, then gently let go. Do the same for legs, pelvis and behind, tummy, chest and shoulders, arms and hands, neck. Feel the tension flow out of your body.
Parents should also bear in mind that they, as well as the whole family, are also part of the backdrop to the exams. Empathy and encouragement, a set routine in the home, healthy meals, a reasonable amount of discipline and an atmosphere conducive to studying will contribute to a pupil feeling secure and motivated.
