Miss Earth SA Visits KZN
The KwaZulu Natal castings began at the Tsogo Sun Beverly Hills Hotel, where interviews and workshops where held to help green and educate the dynamic group of young ladies. The Miss Earth South Africa team took this opportunity to learn about the group of KwaZulu Natal beauties that would fly the flag of sustainability and active citizenship high in this beautiful province. The castings included a project day, where the ladies participated in tree planting ceremony with the Honourable Mayor of Durban, Mr James Nxumalo, which aimed to create a lasting green impact in North Beach's Victoria Park.
One of the core focuses of this project is to give each participant in the Miss Earth South Africa programme an idea of what is expected of them during the course of this leadership programme. "It's important that we expose as many ladies to the work we do as possible, whether they make it to the final round or not, at least they will have learnt and engaged with communities and children alike." said Catherine Constantinides the National Director of Miss Earth South Africa.
Tamerin Jardine, the current Miss Earth South Africa, said, "Mayor Nxumalo is such an inspiration for leaders in our country. He is proud of his city and he was not afraid to roll up his sleeves and get his hands dirty for the betterment of the people of his city. We can all learn from this great example."
Through the month of May Miss Earth South Africa will roll out several glass and energy workshops where regional finalists will engage with in schools in communities from Limpopo to the Western Cape. The ladies will plant bean seeds in Consol jars to create awareness of energy efficiency in young children, as this is the first step to creating energy-conscious consumer who will form part of the 49M initiative going forward.
