Date: 2019-05-10

King Shaka International Airport have given the learners at Cottonlands Primary School an opportunity to quality education and to be exposed to the stimulating world of reading, through the launch of a library. The school located at Ndwedwe, Verulam and in the area this school is the closest primary school with the next one being 7km away, in view of the various socio-economic challenge's many parents consider schools within close vicinity of their homes.

The library is an initiative, which not only promotes a culture of reading but provides equal learning opportunities to many learners who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The principal of Cottonlands Primary school reached out to Airports Company South Africa as an organisation that has demonstrated over the years their ongoing commitment to improving the lives of community's members within their area of operation.

Efforts behind supporting schools which are characterised by socio-economic constraints adds tremendous value to the many youth that experience the lack of quality school material in addition to this many public libraries are situated far from their community therefore requiring transport money.

King Shaka International Airport Senior Manager Corporate Affairs, Colin Naidoo says, "We need to as a corporate citizen actively participate in driving change at all levels in our communities and most importantly identifying areas that require high attention."

King Shaka International Airport has a structured Social Economic Development portfolio, which has over the years evolved to best align with the fundamental needs of communities within the surrounding areas.

King Shaka International Airport SED Specialist, Paul Makhanya remarks, "We witnessed a culture of excellence at Cottonlands Primary, where the school is supported by educators committed to achieving good results regardless of the lack of money and resources. It is evident that the new library will further engrave values of hard-working and dedication."
