Hurley 11th Anniversary
Hurley 11th Anniversary
Celebration
It is the 11th anniversary of the death of Archbishop Denis Hurley and to honour this auspicious occasion, special events will be held over the weekend: 14 / 15 February
The celebrations offer a chance to see inside the new Denis Hurley Centre - this brand new landmark building between Emmanuel Cathedral and the Victoria Street Market. There are three events next weekend:
Sat 14 February: 10am-5pm ? Workshop on the relevance of Pope Francis and Catholic Social Teaching in South Africa today.ÿ With Fr Anthony Egan (Jesuit priest, theologian and political scientist).ÿ Admission free ? bring food to share for lunch.
Sat 14 February: 5.30pm-7pm ? Mass in Emmanuel Cathedral followed by procession and wreath-laying at the tomb of Denis Hurley on the anniversary of his death.
Sun 15 February: 3pm - 4pm ? Public Meeting to report back on the building of the Denis Hurley Centre and the plans for the future, plus an opportunity to meet the new Director of the Centre, Mr Raymond Perrier.
A major focus for the celebrations this year is the recently completed Denis Hurley Centre ? a purposed made new building alongside Emmanuel Cathedral in the city?s CBD close to the busiest road and rail transport hub in the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal. This multi-purpose community facility will promote extensive outreach and training for the homeless, unemployed and refugees and provide primary health care as well as community building programmes. In one of the most diverse, challenging and impoverished neighbourhoods of downtown Durban.
The Denis Hurley Centre is a legacy project honouring Archbishop Denis Hurley OMI who was bishop and archbishop of this city from 1947 to 1992. He played a significant role in opposing apartheid and promoting the vision of a just society.
The Denis Hurley Centre is the result of years of extensive, committed and participative fundraising. Although construction of the new centre is complete, fund raising is still necessary to equip, staff and resource the building ? so 2015 promises to be a busy year of focused fundraising in order to accomplish the task.ÿÿ
