Mop-Up Operations Further Hindered By Heavy Rains

Mop-Up Operations Further Hindered By Heavy Rains

Author: Bulelwa Mvulana

The April floods not only caused loss of lives leaving some families destitute, but also caused considerable damage to critical road infrastructure. Added to this, was the heavy rain over the past weekend which received the highest weather warning from SAWS. Parts of the North Coast reported more than 250mm of rain which caused some mudslides and collapsed roads.

A Special Executive Committee meeting was held in April 2022, directing management to do a ward-to-ward physical verification of the damages was undertaken by the Municipality using different teams of officials from various business units. These reports have formed the basis of the plans to be carried out in the Mop-Up Operation. Although plans are in place residents continue to be frustrated with the slow pace of the mop-up operation carried out by the Municipality.

Amongst other delays has been a shortage of gravel for the fixing of damaged gravel access roads in Ward 20 PR Councillor

communities. Although the roads were graded following the floods in April they have now been further damaged by rains over the past weekend making them inaccessible. Displaced residents continue to be housed in Community Halls whilst awaiting emergency housing allocation. The Democratic Alliance in K waDukuza will continue the monitor the implementation of plans and give feedback on these interventions and ensure that the relevant stakeholders are kept abreast on developments.
