Window on Nature's World

Window on Nature's World

Date: 2022-12-16

From the beginning of time mankind has been intricately involved with the mysteries of the stars and their unique cycles in the galaxies in relation to the Sun and Moon. Each year as we enter the sign of Sagittarius, in December, we are drawn towards the Festive Season with the celebration of the birth of Jesus and the bright Star of Bethlehem announcing his arrival. The three Wize Men followed the Star during their long journey to give honour, praise and gifts.

It is not surprising to find the star symbol is prominent in Nature. The Star Flower family (Hypoxis varieties) display their white or yellow star-shaped blooms in robust colonies. The Starry Wild Jasmine (Jasminum multipartitum) with scrambling habit may deck the wayside or garden trellis with a profusion of white star flowers. The number of the petals is a reflection of The Flower of Life a sacred symbol among many cultures since ancient times. The pattern of the flower with 6 petals forms the symmetrical structure of a hexagon from which all life springs and is connected. The Lotus Flower has long been viewed as a sacred flower by Hindus and the ancient Egyptians.

Decoration at this time of Christmas festivity often flaunts plastic replicas of European pine trees over-burdened with commercial baubles, dangling ivy in baskets and glossy Holly with bright red berries collecting dust. The opportunity to create a vibrant Festive theme is here. Behold! Our coastal Dunes offer select sprays of Martingulu (Carissa rnacrocarpa) with white star flowers and juicy, edible fruits. For safety snip off the thorns before mixing with the glossy foliage of the Black Bird-berry (Psychotria capensis) glistening with its golden crown of flowers. The large Dracaena leaves present a dominant curving form while the elevated grey-areen Strelitzia leaf points upwards to the stars. Then collect the branching flame cluster from the Coral Tree, and add the robust colour of Gerbera daisies in red, crimson and gold. Our Crane Flower with orange heads gives definition, the 'Mandela Gold' variety an exclusive addition.

Let's not forget the ethnic and select the Proteas for the centrepiece, surround with Pin-cushion Protea or Leucadendron tinctum with unusual cup shaped flowers, then Cape Ericas and Vynbos species soften and compliment the display. For festive glitter silver or gold spray is successful when applied to palm leaf fronds, bark and feasters. Woven rush placemats add attractive decor with ethnic beadwork and wildlife beaded figures for the children and visitors to select and treasure as a souvenir.

This day is special for all the people of South Africa. A time to rejoice and remember that "the Family is Paramount" and that we are blessed with friends and associates as we approach the year ahead. Lastly, may we give thanks for His care and guidance and embrace His natural world in which we live, with renewed Respect.
