Save a life this Mandela Day
Durban North Blood Donor Centre is hosting a special blood drive on Tuesday, 18th July from 8am to 6pm where the public are encouraged to dedicate their 67 minutes for Mandela Day to donating blood.
The Sunflower Fund will co-host the drive and recruit donors who would be committed to, when matched with a patient, donating life-saving blood stem cells to someone suffering from Leukaemia or other blood related disorders.
Potential blood stem cell donors need to be between the ages of 18 and 45 and in good health, and should weigh over 50kg's with a BMI of <40. All it takes is two test tubes of blood to register as a donor and the process of donating blood stem cells is similar to donating blood platelets.
Other sponsors of the Mandela Day donor drive include Mum's Mail, Tate, Nolan & Knight, Colour Domain and Chateau Gateaux. There will be gifts for blood donors courtesy of South African National Blood Services (SANBS), TNK will be giving away fudge on the day and Chateau Gateaux will be offering coffee vouchers and a sweet treat for donors.
Last year 160 people donated a pint of blood at the Mandela Day Blood Drive, and this year they hope to top that number. All businesses in the Durban North area as well as the Durban North community are encouraged to attend anddonate a life-saving unit of blood or register at a blood stem cell donor for their contribution to 67 minutes.
In order to be a blood donor, one has to be16 years or older, weigh over 50kg, be in good health and lead a sexually safe lifestyle.
