Swimming South Africa and Transnet National Ports Authority teach children to splash safely

Date: 2013-01-11
Over a thousand youngsters, visiting Durban's main beach this festive season, learnt how to be safe in the water while enjoying their beach holiday thanks to a collaborative campaign between Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) and Swimming South Africa (SSA).

The Ocean Splash Water Safety Awareness Campaign taught about 100 children every day for 10 days, during the height of the December holiday season, how to be water safe through various fun Ocean Splash activities.

SSA and TNPA joined forces in an attempt to reduce the alarming increase in the number of drowning incidents in South Africa through the Water Safety Awareness Programme which introduces children to the risks and dangers of aquatic environments and the importance of being able to swim.

The two-week programme launched at the start of the holiday season featured water safety education by the SSA trained instructors, water safety posters promoting swimming and water safety as well as various fun activities for the whole family.

"Swimming South Africa's mission is to ensure that every South African becomes water safe and to contribute to a healthier, well-educated and skilled population and, with the assistance of Transnet, we are one step closer to achieving that goal" said Swimming SA's CEO Mr. Shaun Adriaanse.

"The Ocean Splash Water Safety Awareness campaign is very significant in the TNPA's calendar: it is about saving lives and responds directly to the National Ports Act 2005 that mandates TNPA to empower and uplift communities that live in proximity to the ports," said Tau Morwe Chief Executive, Transnet National Ports Authority.

"It is tragic that drownings, which are preventable, are said to be one of the top causes of unnatural death among South African children.

"As our business is intricately connected to water we believe that teaming up with Swimming SA to spread water safety awareness which, can be taken home beyond the beach and the sea, is an appropriate campaign for us," he said.

"The role of education in making people aware of the risks of being close to water and how to be safe in aquatic environments, be it the sea or a river or a swimming pool, cannot be underestimated," he said.
