Adventures with Kingsley - 70 Years of Land Rovering

Adventures with Kingsley - 70 Years of Land Rovering

Author: Kingsley Holgate
Date: 2018-06-29

Over the past few decades, as a family,we'vebeen fortunate to adventure to every country on the African continent using Land Roversandwhere possible, weuseour expeditions to improve and save lives.Recently, it wasthe 70thbirthday of theiconic Land Rover brand and we thoughtit a wonderful opportunity tocelebratethis milestone here in KZN - and also use it to do good.So in the fields at Stonehaven Castle we built the numeral'70'with Land Roversof all makes and models from 1948to 2018, withtheir delightful owners sharing stories of adventure around thecampfirethatnight.

Next morning we departed ontoa smaller 'Landies through the Ages' humanitarian and community conservation expedition that zigzagged through the hills and valleys of Zululand. It was a journey with a clear purpose - using Land Rover's 70th anniversaryto do good: wheelchairs for the disabled, Rite to Sight spectacles for the poor-sighted, LifeStraws for clean drinking water and early childhood development resources for rural crèches. What better way to show that Land Rover cares!

Crossing the Phobane Dam wall, winding along dirt roads and through steep hills and deepvalleys rich in Zulu history and folklore to the beautiful Babanango Valley - this must be some of the most spectacular scenery in South Africa for those who like a road less travelled. And what better way to have finished this journey than at the historic Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift battlefields.

After 5 days of adventure and great humanitarian work, this symbolic 70th anniversary expedition came to an end as the hard-working Landy team wound their way home via the spectacular, twisting roads of Qhudeni to the Tugela River.

Thanks to a great team of Land Rover owners and adventurers, it's another'Mission Accomplished'!
