Blue Lagoon upgrade progressing well

Blue Lagoon upgrade progressing well

Date: 2012-10-17
"The work at Blue Lagoon is progressing well and Blue Lagoon Park (west of M4) should be complete and available for public use by year end as should Sunkist and Country Club Beaches," says Mike Andrews, Project Manager, Strategic Projects Unit.

Snell Parade between Country Club and Blue Lagoon will however remain closed until February next year.

The Blue Lagoon upgrade, which began early this year, follows the massive upgrade of Durban's beachfront up to Ushaka Beach that the Municipality had undertaken in 2010. This 2nd phase aims to complete the massive project that gave Durban's beachfront a much needed facelift.

The plan for this popular family venue provided for traffic calming to Snell Parade with on-street parking, new parking node at Blue Lagoon Beach and an expanded parking area at Country Club 1. The extension of the Beach Promenade from Country Club 1 through to Blue Lagoon Park, dune rehabilitation as well as the rehabilitation of the southern bank to the Umgeni River was also accommodated. Visitors to the area can look forward to pedestrianisation of the Blue Lagoon Pier and the erection of trading kiosks, together with lighting, general landscaping, picnic and braai areas and CCTV coverage where not presently covered.

The 2nd phase also included the placement of a georock protection (against possible wave surges) to the eastern face of existing buildings at Country Club II and Thekwini Beach as well as at Blue Lagoon Beach where the proposed new pools are to be located. Protection works are also to be effected on the southern bank of the Umgeni River.

The overall contract value is in the region of R80m and it is expected that the development should be complete by March 2013.
