Mayor delivers 1980 RDP homes in Thembeni

Mayor delivers 1980 RDP homes in Thembeni

Date: 2014-04-05
Those are "Freedom Homes"! says Mayor

KwaDukuza Municipality continues to deliver decent housing with speed, just as the country ushers in the third decade in democracy. The municipality on Friday (28/03/14) delivered 1980 RDP homes in Ward 11, Thembeni; a rural area in KwaDukuza.

KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu re-assures that the delivery of decent human settlements continuesin leaps and bounds with plans afoot for more sustainable settlements.
"We are working well with the department of Human Settlements in the province to package decent housing with speed, to accommodate those who were short-changed in the past."

Mthembu dubbed the massive project as the "freedom homes". He underlined that the project is being named in the 20th year in democracy which symbolizes freedom in its highest order in South Africa since 1994.
The Freedom Homes have been an indication that government's accelerated effort to deliver more housing with speed is a viable application in a democratic country.

He said people deserve decent human settlements and this project is a cause for pride and celebration.

'A lot is being delivered with speed to sustain the people who did not benefit from government in the past. In most rural communities before 1994, there was no running water, no electricity but today, people are receiving the most basic services than ever in the history of the country. Yes, this community has a better story to tell and we have worked well to nullify the effect of government of the past and entrench the richness of freedom for all,' said Mthembu.

The project ran into millions. A total of R179 million was spent by government towards the development.
A local beneficiary, Sphamandla Nyaba (27) said he was impressed. "When me and my family arrived here in 2002, we did not have a decent home. My life has changed, I am happy about this," said Nyaba.

Mthembu indicated plans afoot to deliver housing in other areas, saying, more homes are being built by government in KwaDukuza following its accreditation as a high capacity municipality.

The municipality last year, received a provincial delegation accreditation which allows it to approve housing projects.

A total of 130 out of 1890 title deeds have been issued to Thembeni residents into their new homes.
