It is finally here! Nudist beach on our doorstep

It is finally here! Nudist beach on our doorstep

Date: 2014-11-28

Maybe it is time to let it all hang out

The KZN Naturists Association made the request for 500 metres of Mpenjati Beach, near the Blue Flag Trafalgar Beach and the Mpenjati Nature Reserve, to be declared nudist-friendly. Some South Coast locals opposed the application - saying it will attract perverts and invite rape.

But the Hibiscus Coast municipality says concerns raisedwere based on beliefs and assumptions rather than objective facts. Officials say the beach will attract tourism. The chairman of the SA National Naturists Association, Athol Lutge, says they're happy with the decision.

"We have lots of work to do. We need to contact the Department of Environmental Affairs and see what we are going to do about the ablution facilities on the beach. We also need posters and signage which will inform the public that the beach is a naturist beach.

Earlier this year the KwaZulu Natal Naturist Association (KZNNA) submitted an application asking the council to officially declare part of Trafalgar Beach a nudist beach. The council conducted research into the matter and found that opening a nudist beach would considerably grow tourism and result in significant financial spinoffs, as there are an increasing number of naturist tourists all over the world.

The research findings were confirmed by the South African National Naturist Association (SANNA).Serge Pavlovic, Board Member of SANNA, explains statistic shows that about 7,5 million Germans visit naturist establishments every year. France has in excess of 2 million naturist tourists per year.

SANNA also circulated an online petition to support the 'first official nudist beach in SA'. One of the petitioners commented: "I have visited South Africa as a tourist and loved what little I saw. I would be much more inclined to return and spend my money there if naturism could be part of my holiday."

He explains that while the police do not arrest people that are nude on 'commonly known' naturist beaches, such as Sandy Bay, foreign visitors that are naturist rather choose to spend their holidays in countries that have official naturist/nudist beaches.

"They don't want to worry that they might be arrested on the beach after long-haul flight," says Pavolovic, adding that public beaches do not have a code of conduct preventing people from taking photos without permission.
