Adventures with Kingsley Holgate (1)

Adventures with Kingsley Holgate (1)

Date: 2016-04-08
This is the first episode of 24 action-packed Land Rover dispatches, the first saga in the series recounts a yearlong journey to follow the entire Great African Rift Valley from the dangerous Horn of Africa to Lake Urema in Mozambique's Gorongosa.

It's a story best told in the words taken from the scribbles in Kingsley's sweat-stained expedition journals

"Close to the border with Eritrea, an Afar warlord points a revolver at my head, it all happens in slow-motion. With polite hamdulalas and insha Allas we talk our way out of it. Two weeks later a group of geologists aren't as fortunate - 12 are killed by rebels and four kidnapped, never to be seen again.

But that's behind us now and at least we've crossed the blinding salt flats of Lake Assal, the lowest land point in Africa, reached 'Deset', the lowest island on earth, and with a camel to carry the water and armed gunmen for security, we climbed to the very rim of the lava spewing active volcano of Erta Ale and survived the crossing of the Danakil Desert, considered the hottest place on earth

Here people survive by drinking whatever water they can find be it stagnant pools or puddles left over from the last rain. Later we distribute LifeStraws to Afar communities. Each LifeStraw filters a thousand litres of clean drinking water. It is fulfilling to improve lives through adventure. Ahead of us lies the ancient walled city of Harar overlooking Somaliland. Will keep you posted"
