We So Love Lori

We So Love Lori

Author: Kasia Yoko
Date: 2018-02-23

I guess the first thing that strikes you when you meet Lori Schappe-Youens, is her piercing blue eyes and her intelligent open face. We met last week to discuss her new gallery in Sage Centre, Salt Rock, her new jewellery collection and her gallant plans for the future.

Lori arrived from Wisconsin, USA in 1994 but considers herself a local. Recently divorced, Lori arrived on the North Coast with her two children to heal and find her true calling. What she found restored her faith for life and brought her out of her pain.

Lori's art is bold and gentle. Soft pastels and dramatic lines marry the known and the unknown. "I am an intuitive painter." Lori tells me, "My influences are a combination of the physical world around me, the landscape, the animals, the people, but also the spiritual that hovers in and around all of this and somehow gives credence into something deeper."

Lori has big dreams, having recently moved to Umdloti from Simbithi, Lori wants to explore her inner depths of creativity and reconnoitre countless channels.

Her jewellery range is delicate and dainty. Lori incorporates the latest high street style with recycled matter that she finds while walking her chocolate coloured labradoodle, Olie, on the beach.

Her skilfully crafted jewels are named after her best friends, each range receiving a generous credit and a short introduction. "As an artist, I express my every whim, desire, dread or bit of angst, through the combining of colour, texture and imagery onto my substrate."

Lori's creations are not just bold canvases and pretty trinkets - Lori's art is the world that engulfs us. "I found out that having a sense of humour is imperative to surviving on this wiled planet and that humour presents itself throughout my work, just when I least expect it to."

Lori's dreams and aspirations are set and her path is drawn. She has embarked on a journey of exploration and unearthing. What she hopes to find on this journey is her hidden talents and her inner submissions. "It's a good life, it's a good ride and I feel honoured to be an artist every single day."

Love Lori is situated at shop 5, Sage Centre, 1 Foxhole Lane, Salt Rock. You can contact Lori on 060 313 0254.
