Using adventure to improve and save lives, the Kingsley Holgate Foundation team will keep up the humanitarian initiatives of malaria prevention, Rite to Sight and water purification, but, they are also taking up the fight against rhino poaching and are moving in to help at a time that is being described as the deadliest yet for Mama Afrika's rhino populations. In South Africa the rhino poaching epidemic has reached the shocking levels of one rhino being killed almost every day.
As part of the expedition's rhino conservation initiative, Land Rover South Africa has sponsored a big Land Rover Defender, which has been branded with hundreds of messages and signatures of solidarity in support of rhino protection. Dian, aged 7, wrote "I hope that when I'm big I'll be able to see a live rhino in the wild'
During the expedition this Landy will be used to conduct Rhino conservation themed art competitions and 20 minute a side "man of the match' soccer challenges to schools alongside Rhino conservation areas.
"Future generations need to understand the need to protect the last of our Rhinos - we need to get into more hearts and minds,' says Kingsley Holgate, who has led Land Rover expeditions to every country on the African continent.
On the 19th June, the Rutherfoords will be hosting the end of expedition event at the historic Ghost Mountain Inn at Mkuze in KZN at which time the conservation messaged Land Rover will be handed over to Project Rhino KZN as a dedicated Rhino protection and monitoring unit.' That night around the campfire, KZN historian Ken Gillings will give a talk on the colourful history of the Ghost Mountain.
Rich in legend and folklore, the mystical Lubombo Range of Mountains is somewhat of an untold story which the Kingsley Holgate led expedition hopes to bring alive.
Kingsley discusses the expedition with his Masai guide; in the background is the active volcano of Doinyo Lengai.
