Sarah Chang Live with the KZN Philharmonic in Durban

Sarah Chang Live with the KZN Philharmonic in Durban

Date: 2013-06-13
As the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra (KZN Philharmonic) continues to celebrate its thirtieth anniversary in 2013 it brings another pinnacle of excellence to classical music fans in South Africa.

Sarah Chang, recognised as one of the world's great violinists, will appear in concert with the KZN Philharmonic, playing Sibelius, Violin Concerto at the Durban City Hall at 7.30 pm on Thursday 13 June.

Since her debut with the New York Philharmonic at the age of eight Sarah has performed with the greatest orchestras, conductors and accompanists internationally in a career spanning more than two decades. In 2012, she will have recorded exclusively for EMI Classics for 20 years.

"It is a great honour to showcase as exceptional a musician as Ms Chang to South African audiences" said Mr Bongani Tembe, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of the KZN Philharmonic. "We are delighted to be presenting this concert for Durban music lovers."

To quote the New York Times: "Her gifts are at a level so removed from the rest of us that all we can do is feel the appropriate awe and then wonder on the mysteries of nature. The ancients would certainly have had Ms. Chang emerging fully formed from some Botticellian scallop shell."

The KZN Philharmonic will then tour to Johannesburg with Sarah Chang to perform the same concert at the Linder Auditorium on the Wits University campus at 8 pm on Thursday 20 June and Saturday 22 June. On Friday 21 June they will present an educational concert to learners in the morning, followed by a choral community concert with the Sound of the Nation Choir in the evening at the Soweto Theatre.

"The quest for excellence and innovation has enabled the KZN Philharmonic to be the first orchestra in South Africa's democratic dispensation to distinguish themselves with a thirty year record. The Orchestra's mission is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of all South Africans by presenting concerts of a high calibre and integrating music into the learning experience of our children." commented Mr Tembe.
