The Impossible made Possible

The Impossible made Possible

Date: 2019-06-07

A decade ago, primary school pupil, Thembilihle Mgenge, was part of a class of fifty youngsters at Amaoti Primary School, North Durban. Visions for their futures were often clouded by the challenges of finding school fees, money for uniforms and jostling to glean a basic education in very crowded and far from ideal conditions.

A group of youth facilitators from The Domino Foundation's Life Skills programme met Thembilihle's class for the first time in 2008 and so started her relationship with the NPO.

The Life Skills programme helped build Thembilihle's understanding that she could be empowered to make wise life choices, to develop a sense of self-worth and purpose and that she had a hope for the future, lessons the young lady learned well.

Thembilihle showed great academic promise and her natural confidence and outgoing personality, coupled with a determination to succeed in a profession which had gripped her imagination made her stand out to the leaders of one of The Domino Foundation's other initiatives, the Skills Development programme. This is an education platform through which disadvantaged individuals are empowered and equipped to reach their full potential. It provides opportunities for young people to achieve an education in their chosen field by giving access to funding for tertiary qualifications, living and travel allowances and educational resources.

Thembilihle's situation was assessed to determine a tailor-made funding plan for her chosen course. In parallel to her studies, she also completed a one year online learning Life eQuip Course, specifically designed to incorporate essential life skills and tools to assist in job-seeking, household budget-planning, CV writing and other critical life lessons.

Thembilihle fitted all the criteria and embarked on a three degree course in Education where she performed well throughout her studies. At the end of 2018, she got the news that she had been awarded her Financial Management Diploma from the Thekweni FET College and has started this year with a position at Domino Trading.

Thembilihle sees herself as being blessed and has a dream to inspire those youngsters in her charge to shrug off any sense of being 'prisoners' of their circumstances.

This changed life is the direct result of partnerships and using B-BBEE Skills Development funding to make Thembelihle's dreams come true. Domino invites companies with a June financial year-end to connect with them to develop a strategy to channel resources for greatest impact.
