Men in brown arrest 260 drunk drivers

Men in brown arrest 260 drunk drivers

Date: 2014-01-17
KWADUKUZA Mayor, Ricardo Mthembu welcomes the arrests made by the KwaDukuza Community Safety Department during the festive season.

A total of 260 drivers were arrested since mid-November. All arrests are linked to drinking and driving.

Mthembu notes these statistics with concern; saying such figures are a damning indication and show elements of irresponsibility on government roads.

He says instability and losses of innocent lives as a result of drunk drivers could have started the year in a sombre note if the arrests were not made.

All suspects were arrested and detained following random operations conducted by the men in brown and the SAPS. The arrests were made on various check points including Zinkwazi, Blythedale, Greater KwaDukuza area, Tinley manor, Shakaskraal and Greater Ballito area. The checkpoints were done on all major roads and beaches.

Another alarming report was tabled today, indicating the number of fines issued to defective vehicles and moving violations. A total of 1450 violations were recorded in December 2013 and January 2014.

Mthembu today, commended the unit and applauded the joint operations of various law enforcement units saying that the future of road offenders is void.

"With the additions in our arsenal of measures, these arrests are highly commendable and we salute the gallant efforts made by law enforcement agencies who worked to the nigh to ensure that there is peace and stability in our communities"

"I hope these statistics make an indelible impression in the people of KwaDukuza as they have to be confident about our work"

"Those who continue to undermine the law will be cut down to size as nobody is above the Justice system. Our municipality has always espoused the notion of safety for all during and beyond the festive season", Mthembu said.

The new-year rang very well although some sombre notes in December did play out, the Mayor says. "The death of one person in our roads is one too many, it cannot be tolerated therefore; we cannot rest until we shake-off the fateful habit exercised by irresponsible people".

Mthembu still maintains that the battle against crime and road carnages should be everybody's business.

He has however said that the department, working together with other law enforcement agencies have managed to sustain stability on the roads as the festive season draws close to an end.
