The Ekhaya Multi Arts Centre is where Friday's cultural activities take place. The activities include films on Hip Hop culture and the inside story of The Graceland Band as well as a full programme of interactive music workshops beginning at noon.
The undoubted highlighton Saturday eveningwill be the World Premiere launch of Ray Phiri's, "The Man, The Music, The Friendships."This unique concert concept sees the award winning Phiri perform with The Graceland Band featuring Themba Mkhize, Bakithi Khumalo and Isaac Mtshali, and stellar special guests Oliver Mtukudzi (Zimbabwe) N'Faly Kouyate (Guinea), The Drummers of Burundi (Burundi) and Sacred Drummers (Reunion).
The festivities begin at noon on Saturday, with a fashion show by The House of Lindarco before moving on to performances by a multi-cultural supporting cast including Selaelo Selota, John Ellis, Lendel Moonsamy and Holly. A late night DJ and hip hop contingent including DJ Dubs, Zakwe,DJ Siyanda, DJ Happy Girl, DJ Tunner and DJ le Soul will follow into the night.
Besides the creation of job opportunities (80% of the Festival staff have come from KwaMashu) the Festival addresses the core objectives of stimulating of township cultural tourism, creating a new permanent grass roots festival located in a township that is dedicated to the celebration of arts and culture in eThekwini, the provision of local artists with exposure to significant local audiences, and enabling local artists the opportunity to interact with world class international performers. Park n Ride facilities will be available from Gateway Shopping Centre to the festival for parking and safety convenience.
