Foraging in your backyard: Exploring Edible Weeds with Nikki in Mt Moreland

Foraging in your backyard: Exploring Edible Weeds with Nikki in Mt Moreland

For years the idea that we can live of our pavements has been running around in my mind. But how do we know what we can eat and what will kill us? A few weeks ago a local boffin on sustainable eating, Nikki Brighton visited Mt Moreland and spent a few hours with interested individuals whom, like me, would like to know more about edible plants.

Nikki Brighton is renowned in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal for her outreach work, particularly concerning food. Having spent years volunteering on a personal basis in the Howick area, she uses her experience and networks to create a more ethical and sustainable food supply chain by connecting producers and consumers directly.

Nikki explained that "shopping at Woolies" will soon be an unsustainable reality and that we all need to rediscover how we can live more sustainable and responsibly, and how a little walk on the wild side can sustain you, not just by filling your belly, but also by nourishing you with natural goodness. This was another fabulous event created by Wendy O'Grady from Spirit of Africa.
