Business Talk

We've all been in a position where we feel our teams should be getting through more work but we keep getting told that all are overworked. Its only when you have a head count freeze and a couple of people leave without being replaced and the work still gets done, that we are convinced that we were right.

Parkinson's Law states that the time taken to do work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion. Just think about your own day and whether you waste time in meetings, "chatting at the water cooler" or completing tasks that do not add any value. What about all those group emails that sap your time, energy and enthusiasm? Even if your answer is none to the aforementioned, Parkinson still believes that it is human nature to get things done based on deadlines.

All businesses need some structure to ensure that things are happening efficiently. Put the right people in the right jobs, make sure all have job descriptions and goals and have policies and procedures to guide behavior.

As important is company culture. A culture of excellence must be instilled throughout. It's a journey but it does begin with a single step.
