Take a journey around the culinary globe at the Good Food & Wine Show

Take a journey around the culinary globe at the Good Food & Wine Show

Date: 2013-08-09
A culinary cultural quarter is one of the new areas at the Good Food & Wine Show, which takes place in Durban from Thursday to Sunday.

This vibrant area will include the Spekko Spice Table where visitors to the show will be able to enjoy the sharing, preparing and tasting of cultural foods, either traditional or contemporary, and hear stories from well-known community celebrities who have a common passion for food.

The area is headlined by celebrity chef Anjali Pathak, who is part of the famous Patak spice family.

Pathak believes that spices and seasoning can transform food: "It is all I know, I grew up in this amazing kitchen full of spices; all of these wonderful things my mom would be experimenting with at home."

Anjali recounts her favourite food memory: "When I was about four years old my grandmother bought me a baby sized rolling pin and traditional rolling board to roll Indian breads. Each night we would make the dough for the fresh chapattis. Then she would encourage me to roll them out in perfect rounds saying: 'If you can make them round, one day you will find a good husband like your grandfather'."

She laughs: "I am unmarried with no children, maybe because my chapattis still aren't round!"

Jessica Westergreen, an ex-Christina Martin student, restaurant owner, entrepreneur and chef is also appearing in this fabulous new area. She has a huge passion for life, laughter and the culinary arts. She is currently Chef Facilitator and Assessor at Zen Africa Chef Academy of Food and Wine.

Sheila Somer's book Indian Cuisines the South African Way was published in 2008 and it incorporates the traditional Indian way of cooking with a South African approach, thus combining the two diverse cultures. Somers' intention is to train chefs to become more and more acquainted with Indian gastronomy.

Spekko Spice Table will come to life with wonderful anecdotes and delicious food and is authentic, down to earth and welcoming.

The Good Food & Wine Show takes place from August 8 to 11at the Durban Exhibition Centre. Tickets cost R75 for adults for R40 for children and are available from Computicket. This includes more free theatres than ever before. Also go to https://www.goodfoodandwineshow.co.za for more details.
