Dr Mthembu Vacates Office As Mayor
Former Mayor of KwaDukuza, Dr. Ricardo Mthembu has thanked his party, the African National Congress (ANC) for giving him the responsibility to lead KwaDukuza Municipality as a political head for the past eight years.
"I'm honored by your respect, humility and the good chance that I have been given. Leading this institution was never easy; I have had sleepless nights, minding the wellbeing of the homeless, the infirm as well as the stability of this institution. I wish to thank the ANC for entrusting me with this huge responsibility for the past eight year."
Mthembu was addressing officials for the last time at a scheduled farewell meeting earlier today, 17 May 2019, following his submission to vacate office as the mayor yesterday. Cllr Dolly Govender will serve as Acting Mayor.
Mthembu is the first Mayor of KwaDukuza to have completed a Term of Office under the democratic dispensation. He joined the local sphere of government in the year 2000 as a Councillor; he also served council for two consecutive terms as Mayor, from 2011 - 2016 and 2016 up until 16 May 2019.
He told officials to become ambassadors of the institution as the Municipality is growing with speed, coupled with a vision of becoming a city by 2030.
Mthembu leaves the Council with a good record of service to the people.
Over the years, KwaDukuza Municipality has been a multiple winner and runner-up of the KZN Govan Mbeki Awards and has consistently obtained unqualified audit outcomes since 2011.
From 2011 up to 2013 and in 2019, KwaDukuza was rated number one in the country in terms of financial sustainability by Ratings Africa.
