Walking the Walk for Diabetes

Walking the Walk for Diabetes

Date: 2012-10-03
The organisers and supporters of Diabetes SA are all set to go! After a successful first event with over 1000 people entering last year, the Durban Global Diabetes 5km Walk supported by Pronutro will once again take place along Durban's Golden Mile on Sunday, October 28th.

The organisers are expecting over 3000 people to walk the 5km route this year.??Jenny Russell, the Branch Manager at Diabetes SA in Durban says, "With more people worldwide dying of Diabetes complications than AIDS and cancer, we are losing the battle against this cruel and deadly disease in every community. It is hoped that campaigns like the Global Diabetes Walk will continue to raise awareness of Diabetes, the Health Tsunami of the 21st century, and move people towards living more active and healthy lifestyles". ??The MC for the event is local wellness celebrity and Fitness Specialist Lisa Raleigh, who will be providing a few fitness demonstrations and educating the public on appropriate diet and exercise.

"South Africa needs an event like this. Diabetes has been dubbed the 'silent killer' for years, with good reason, and it's time we sat up and did something about it! I deal with so many clients suffering from diabetes and similar lifestyle diseases, and so much can be done to prevent them.

Seeing so many sufferers on a regular basis makes this an issue close to my heart" Raleigh said. Her advice for those preparing for the walk is to stretch, keep hydrated and make sure you are wearing a good, supportive pair of running shoes.

In addition to the Walk, there will be a festive health expo which allows members of the public to receive free glucose and blood pressure tests, among others.

The first 500 paid up entries into the Diabetes global walk will receive a free event Diabetes South Africa Global Walk T-shirt courtesy of Accu-Chek. Entry fee is just R40 per person with all proceeds going to this deserving cause, call Pat on 082 4995 222.
