Where Did Madagascar

Where Did Madagascar

Date: 2014-04-11
An illustrated talk by Dr. M. Corrie Schoeman
School of Life-Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal Madagascar, the fourth-largest island in the world, provides a home to a remarkable variety of plant and animal species, including 49 bat species, of which 37 are endemic to the island. Understanding where this diversity comes from requires understanding the geological, geographic, and climatic histories that have shaped the evolution of lineages on Madagascar. Of special interest are the endemic family of Old World Sucker-footed Bats (Myzopodidae), as well as the Long-fingered Bats (Miniopterus spp.), and the evolution of bat pollination of Baobabs. Developing human history, particularly during the last few years of political turmoil, threatens to undo tens of millions of years of evolution, unless safeguards can be put in place to protect Madagascar's unique bat biota from the greed of human institutions.
