SARDINE RUN 2024

SARDINE RUN 2024

Date: 2024-06-25

On Friday, 07 June 2024, there were signs of sardines coming into KZN waters. This was repeated on Saturday, 08 June 2024, but at first light on Sunday, 09 June 2024, the sardines were as far north as Hibberdene in the early morning. Sardines could be spotted all along the Port Shepstone beachfront with an abundance of gamefish present. Local anglers were catching kingfish, queen mackerel, shad, and various other fish preying upon the sardines. Spinner sharks were breaching and spinning in the air. This kaleidoscope of activity has carried on throughout the day on Sunday, 09 June 2024, and once again on Monday, 10 June 2024. The weather is looking good for the rest of the week, and the surf size drops off so netting should be relatively easy.

The best advice is to capitalize on the opportunity that the sardines are here and make the best of the viewing. Although the weather will remain good for the next few days, the opportunity of viewing the sardines may not be as good as the present moment.

On Sunday, 9 June 2024, there were 7 nettings of sardines, and the first crates were sold at R 700.00. On Monday, 10 June 2024, there have been numerous nettings stretching from Ramsgate on the Lower South Coast through to Umgababa on the Upper South Coast. The starting price for the sardines was R 500.00 per crate.

We have removed all Sharks Board Safety Gear from Port Edward through to Isipingo, and bathing is banned along the south coast now. All signage is in place, and the local authorities have been advised. Today, we are going to remove the Sharks Board Safety Gear from Anstey's and Breighton Beaches. The bathing at these two beaches will also be banned.
