Ubuntu Day

Ubuntu Day

Date: 2012-10-17
The Grade 8 students of Crawford College North Coast have been studying the topics of Nation-building and Ubuntu in Life Orientation this term. Their teachers, Mrs Donél van Zyl and Ms Carla Brownrigg, decided to create an opportunity for the students to practice Ubuntu in a real-life situation, and Kwa.Mama was the obvious choice for this experience. Kwa.Mama is a care centre situated in Shakaskraal, where over 200 children aged two to five years old, attend pre-school free of charge. Frida Bontkowskyj of Kwa.Mama and her team do amazing work with the children, and the Grade 8 students were very keen to assist them in their endeavours by having an "Ubuntu Day" at the centre.

The aim of "Ubuntu Day" was for the Grade 8s to practice Ubuntu through educating the children of Kwa.Mama. They spent a few weeks preparing for this day, researching and designing physical and educational activities to conduct with the pre-schoolers. Mrs Rose Humphries, principal of the Crawford North Coast Pre-Primary, also assisted the Grade 8s in preparation for "Ubuntu Day", by allowing them to spend a morning with her students and teachers to get tips and ideas for the creation of their teaching tools.

"Ubuntu Day" was filled with learning and bonding, and was a huge success. Both the children of Kwa.Mama and the Grade 8 students benefitted from the experience. The Grade 8s did not only show Ubuntu through their determination to teach the children, but through their genuine compassion and care for the pre-schoolers exercised throughout the day.
