Durban medical pro is new face of world radiography

Author: Marlan Padayachee

Westville's Dr Fozy Peer is the new face of world radiography.

A soft spoken, unassuming, but a medical professional with strong work and moral ethics, the mother of two and grandmother of five has risen to the top of the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists (ISRRT) to the 500000-member body in 88 countries. Dr Peer succeeded in bringing the world congress to Durban in 2008.

Dr Peer won the confidence of delegates at the 18th World Congress in Helsinki, making the senior manager in nuclear medicine at the Albert Luthuli Hospital the fourth women president in 52 years, and Africa's second.

Homecoming was greeted with a gift of pilgrimage by her son, Irshaad, 33, a chartered accountant, who travelled with his hard-working mum trip to Hajj in Mecca during Ramadaan.

Dr Peer returned home from Jeddah, having gained her spiritual succour, serenity and peace to take on the challenges of her new job, which includes two major world congress sessions in Seoul, South Korea, in 2016, and Trinidad and Tobago in 2018, and World Radiography Day on 8 November this year:

"I have connected spiritually about my life, family, community and career while in Mecca. I have been to the holy land a few times with my husband, Aslam and two children, but this was my first time during Ramadan. I am truly gifted and this was a calling from God to be worshipping during the holy month in the Ka'ba and the Great Mosque."
