International Mandela Day blitz

Date: 2014-07-25
Operation Clean Up takes centre stage on Mandela Day

KWADUKUZA Mayor Ricardo Mthembu on Mandela Day, raised efforts to keep the town of KwaDukuza even cleaner. He was joined by government workers who hit the trails to various areas on Operation Clean Up for Madiba, the 2014 theme declared by the President of the country. Government workers across the board went through extra-ordinary lengths into bringing positive change.

Ten (10) task teams made up of Councillors and officials were deployed to various areas to deliver food and blankets to mostly destitute families.Mthembu joined the campaign to applaud the good work done by public servants in celebrating the life and times of the father of the nation, Nelson Mandela.

Mthembu dedicated his 67 minutes doing good to help the needy, he visited the community of Nyathikazi crche in Darnall, nodding approval on a number of community development campaigns done on Mandela day.

"We have joined the world in raising the flag higher in celebrating the life of the martyr to the cause of freedom and democracy. It also gives us yet a pleasure to be part of these celebrations. Public servants are exercising diligence on the way they are serving on the vision inspired by Madiba. These are some of the ideas espoused by him as a thing that we should all embrace and share"

The 67 Minutes campaign is held in honour of Mandela whose life was dedicated to making the world a better place. The day follows the 2009 declaration by the United Nations, calling for the international community to make everyday a Mandela Day.

KwaDukuza will continue to support Mandela Day as the legacy of a giant lives, said Mthembu. "Mandela loved people, its upon us to carry that vision as part of honouring his work and life"

He called it a day after the new renovations in Nyathikazi crche. His plan for the day, was to take action and inspire change. "Mandela left a legacy which we cannot afford to loose in the mists of time. The spirit of Mandela remains close at heart. You see, when we think of Mandela, that responsibility to serve others with no returns hits home. We should try in all possible times to make everyday a Mandela Day"

The 18th of July marks the birth of Mandela who spent 67 years of his life as a fighter for liberation for South Africans.

President Jacob Zuma, during his State of the Nation Address declared that the theme for the 2014 Mandela Day celebrations will be to clean South Africa.

In 2009, the United Nations declared the 18th of July as the annual International Nelson Mandela Day in honor of Mandela's birthday.
