The second edition of the Bay Union Surfski Series culminated in a frenzy of action at Durban beachfront's Point Watersports Club (PWC) on Sunday 25 May as Hank McGregor and Nicole Russell romped home to clinch victory in the day's feature race while Grant van der Walt and Jenna Ward were crowned 2014 series champions.
The Bay Union Reef Challenge presented by PWC, the fourth and final leg of the series, produced ideal conditions of clear blue skies, hot temperatures and near flat seas for the 12km and 6km feature races before a sizeable crowd gathered on the shoreline to soak up the action and cheer on the participants of the Bay Union Shootout, a 1km sprint knockout competition around the iconic Vetchie's Reef. ?
McGregor put in a determined effort to overcome the lingering after effects of his recent trip to Hawaii, where he claimed the prestigious Molokai Challenge winner's trophy, to win both of Sunday's tough challenges. "I'm still feeling a little jetlagged from my recent international trip but I couldn't miss the final race of the series so it was great to come back and win both the main race and the Shootout," said Epic Kayaks/Team Jeep's globally renowned athlete.
The Bay Union Reef Challenge presented by PWC and the Bay Union Shootout concluded the 2014 Bay Union Surfski Series however there is still plenty of surfski action still to take place in KwaZulu-Natal this winter with the full calendar culminating in the FNB Mazars Durban Downwind which doubles as the 2014 SA Surfski Championships.
