Denis Hurley Centre 'Sing-along Sound of Music' fundraiser at the Rhumbelow Theatre

Denis Hurley Centre 'Sing-along Sound of Music' fundraiser at the Rhumbelow Theatre

The recent 'Sing-along Sound of Music' fundraiser at the Rhumbelow Theatre delivered both community energy and measurable impact for the Denis Hurley Centre. Held earlier this month, the afternoon drew a full spectrum of supporters: long-time friends of the Centre, families, students, parish groups, and Durban residents who simply wanted to contribute to a good cause.

The theatre created an atmosphere that encouraged participation rather than passive viewing. Costumes ranged from nuns to curtain-clad Von Trapp lookalikes, and the audience treated the film as a collective experience - singing through the soundtrack, applauding favourite moments, and revelling in the shared nostalgia.

The programme included a raffle that added an extra layer of engagement. Prizes were donated by local businesses and individuals, keeping the proceeds focused on the Centre's work. By the end of the afternoon, the combined generosity of everyone present produced more than R33,000 in support of the DHC's operations.

The Denis Hurley Centre continues to serve some of Durban's most vulnerable communities through food support, healthcare access, education, and safe-space initiatives. Events like this one are essential: they raise funds, but they also expand the network of people who understand the Centre's mission and commit themselves to it. The success of the 'Sing-along Sound of Music' afternoon reflects a simple truth - when the Durban community gathers with purpose, real results follow.
