Cardinal's Concert

Cardinal's Concert

Author: Pinkie Mtshali
Date: 2012-09-12
Every year during Heritage Month, there is a special one-off concert in Durban's beautiful Emmanuel Cathedral to honour Cardinal Wilfrid Napier, OFM.

This year the concert will take place on Sunday 16 September at 3.30pm as a fundraiser for the Denis Hurley Centre.

The first such concert was in 2002, and has become an annual event to showcase beautiful music, honour the much loved and respected Cardinal and to fund-raise for the desperately needed Denis Hurley Centre.

In celebrating the city's cultural diversity through art, the theme of the concert this year is Youth and Heritage. "We hope to open discussions with youth about the importance of preserving our culture and heritage and what it means to them as young people. Forming part of the entertainment will be a mixed programme of Opera, Classical, Isicathamiya, gospel music, dancers and a praise poet," says Emmanuel Cathedral Music Director, Pinkie Mtshali.

Participating musicians include the Army Band; classical singer Sindi Kunene; gospel singers Zamokuhle; opera singer Dr Cedric Borchard; the Emmanuel Cathedral massed choir; dancers from Burundi and the Congo; a praise poet, Thule; an organist Siyabonga Gumbi; isicathamiya singers the Young Kholwa Brothers and vivacious diva, Pinkie Mtshali.

All profits raised will go towards the Denis Hurley Centre (DHC) - a new multi-purpose centre which will provide an enabling environment for care, education, support and community-building in one of the most diverse and challenging neighborhoods of inner city Durban.

The precinct surrounding the Cathedral and the DHC is rich in religious, cultural and historic sites. The building will be a legacy project honouring Archbishop Denis Hurley OMI who played a significant role in opposing apartheid and promoting a just society.
