Mahatma Gandhi's legacy, embedded in nearby Phoenix Settlement, will soon be shared with local and international visitors opposite London's Buckingham Palace. From the landmark Phoenix Settlement where Gandhi the publisher of the Indian Opinion and experimented with nonviolent peaceful resistance (satyagraha), near Umhlanga, to London, the revered saint's towering history will be immortalised alongside great statesmen like Nelson Mandela and Jan Smuts.

Visitors to London will be able to marvel at some of the statesmen who had shaped three countries in the 20th century when Britain erects a statue of the colonial - apartheid era, Mahatma Gandhi. India 's independence icon will take his place alongside Winston Churchill, Jan Smuts and Nelson Mandela in Parliament Square opposite the Palace of Westminster, yet another spectacle for visitors who throng the centre of the world tourist mecca in summer.

UK foreign secretary William Hague, upon setting his sight on Gandhi's memorial in New Delhi, described him as 'and towering giant'. His finance colleague, George Osborne Said Whitehall would 'honour his memory' after meeting India ' new Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ironically not a leader of the Congress Party that swept India to independence with the non - violence mantra of a man Churchill once called a 'half - naked fakir', hoping then the fasting peace guru would die.

In South Africa! Gandhi was jailed by the Smuts government for speaking up for the rights of oppressed Indians, especially the1860 labourers and then the merchant class. In Paris, Gandhi's wax statue is attracting onlookers as it too waxes lyrical among the newly - waxed figures of Hollywood's screen idols, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Even Malawi has a statue of the famous leader.
