Movember And A New World Surf League Champ

Movember And A New World Surf League Champ

Date: 2016-11-04
John John Florence of Hawaii clinched the 2016 World Surf League (WSL) Title in dramatic fashion with a victory at the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal in Peniche, marking the first time a Hawaiian has held the world surfing crown since the late Andy Irons in 2004. "I honestly can't believe it right now, it's obviously not sunk in just yet," Florence said."I know my mom and family are watching online right now and I really wish they were here with me.I'm so stoked.I've worked my whole life towards this and I have so many people to thank for this."

A six-year competitor on the elite WSL Championship Tour, the Hawaiian had been threatening the throne since his inception in 2011 having previously finished 4th (2012) and 3rd (2014). Seemingly destined for surfing excellence since stepping foot on board at two years young, Florence has spent the last two decades evolving into one of the most dynamic talents the sport has ever seen.

In local news its time for the OFF THE LIP MOVEMBER SURF JAM, which will once again be held at Beach Bums on the North Coast, on Movember Saturday the 26th.

"Join Quiksilver and team as we rock our Mo's, dress up 70's style and dust off the old retro surfboards. Single fins & twin fins will be the order of the day so bring your style and steez, don't forget to GROW YOUR MO, we're supporting the Movember Foundation once again, creating awareness and raising funds for the Movember Foundation which focuses on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health & suicide prevention." Says their Facebook site.

The entry fee to surf in the competition is a meagre R100 and you will also receive a limited edition Movember t-shirt. The divisions for the competition are Open Men's, Ladies and Legends for those over 50. There are limited entries and they will have awesome prizes including limited edition surfboards, Gunslinger skateboards, cases of Flying Fish, Nixon watches and more.
