Ashton International College celebrated the achievements of their sports and cultural achievers at the annual Sports and Cultural Awards function held on Wednesday, 16 October 2013.

The Sports and Cultural Awards function recognised a total of 78 students who have achieved in 16 different sporting codes either offered by Ashton, or recognised by the College.

Half colours are awarded to students for selection and participation in a district team, full colours are awarded for selection and participation in a provincial team, and honours are awarded to a student selected for and participated on National level.  The Cum Laude Award, the most prestigious award, a white blazer is awarded to a student who represents their country at International level.

A very special award was made to 11 year old Zo‘ Frank who is currently rated as the fastest 11 year old in South Africa.  Currently being compared to the late Karen Muir,   Zo‘ was awarded Honours as well as a black blazer for Excellent Achievement, a new introduction of this prestigious award in the Junior College. This is the first time a black blazer has been awarded to a Junior College student. Zo‘ broke 5 S A Records in the 2012/2013 swimming season, and trains with Ashton Swimming Academy. Honours for swimming was also awarded to 12 year old Dylan Somerville who clinched 3 gold, 2 silver and a bronze medal at Level 2.   Half colours for swimming at Nationals was awarded to Karley Lotz, Kayler Hulett, Brooklyn and Jason Milne, Pierre Botha, Jessica and Rachel Brown, Trent Strydom, Dylan Spring, Matthew du Rand and Callum Osborne.

But it was two ladies who bagged first prize in the Senior College, with Cristan Sardinha and Kate Perkins both being awarded the prestigious Cum Laude Award.  The two Form 4 students participated at the Florence Choir Festival with the KZN Youth Choir.  The Choir clinched 3 gold and 1 silver medal.

"We are extremely proud of our students who strive to achieve academically, on the sports field and culturally and for a young school only in it's 4th year, the talent, character and spirit of the students is applauded," said Mr J Erasmus, Executive Head.  This was echoed by Mrs Flick Holmes, Junior College Head and Mrs Sam de Vries, Sports Director.  "A proud moment indeed for the Ashton Family.  The students have used their God given talents, and being able to recognise their phenomenal success was extremely gratifying," said Mrs Holmes.
