Recognising Local Legends at the Annual Ingwazi Awards

Recognising Local Legends at the Annual Ingwazi Awards

Date: 2016-09-30
Each year the Land of Legends Association recognizes a "Legend" who has contributed significantly to the upliftment and promotion of KwaZulu-Natal. This award, known as the Ingwazi Award (meaning to nurture) has previously been bestowed upon great local personalities such as Dr. Zweli Mkhize, Dr Ian Player, David Rattray, Lawrance Anthony and John Smit. Last week this special award was handed to two brilliant conservationists, Andrew Zaloumis and Simon Naylor. The function took place at the majestic Fordoun Hotel & Spa.

Andrew Zaloumis is the CEO of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority. Under his leadership, the park was proclaimed as South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage site. His work has resulted in the economic turnaround of the park with meaningful empowerment and benefits to the local communities and sustainable conservation practices. Working for over twenty years in poverty stricken rural areas with high conservation value, Andrew is interested in indigenous knowledge systems related to the environment and wilderness.

Simon Naylor has played an integral part in &Beyond's conservation and guiding teams for the past eighteen years. Simon took &Beyond's ranger training programme to East Africa where he communicated the &Beyond way throughout Tanzania and Kenya. After nearly four years he moved to Ksane to take charge of &Beyond's Botswana Explorer Expedition's operations. In 2006 he returned to Phinda as Conservation Manager. Simon has used his skills to help formulate national conservation strategies for elephant, lion, cheetah and both black and white rhino.

Renowned Historian storyteller, Rob Caskie, once again joined the cultural entertainment with his lively portrayal of Zulu history. Rob has built a fine reputation as a world-renowned storyteller and business motivator. Master of ceremonies was the Founder of Fordoun, Jon Bates, while the presentation was delivered by Kevin Pretorious and Patrick Boddam-Whetham.

The Land of the Legends group prides themselves on celebrating all that is great about KZN. Their members include Abingdon Wine Estate, Ardmore Ceramic Art, Beverly Hills Hotel, Fordoun Hotel and Spa, Hartford House, Phinda Private Game Reserve, Rob Caskie, Rocktail Beach Camp and The Oyster Box Hotel.
