Keeping KwaDukuza Clean

Keeping KwaDukuza Clean

Date: 2019-10-04

The KwaDukuza Municipality on Friday, 27 September 2019, began the "KEEP YOUR TOWN CLEAN" campaign intending to raise awareness on matters relating to keeping communities in the KwaDukuza municipal area clean and aesthetically pleasant.

This past Friday, the Acting Mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality took to the CBD of KwaDukuza formerly known as Stanger to assist with sweeping the streets and picking up litter and dirt as part of an intensified cleaning and community awareness campaign. The KwaDukuza CBD state of cleanliness has been a topical one, particularly for the municipality as well the media.

During the cleanup, Her Worship Cllr. Dolly Govender, interacted with residents, landlords, shopkeepers and municipal workers. She spoke to these groups about her worry of how the CBD was looking and that fact that some businesses were now using litter bins in the CBD to dispose of their inhouse waste.

"As the municipality, we strongly believe that we can only overcome the challenges of a dirty town and neighbourhoods through collaborative and coordinated efforts, which involves all the stakeholders such as residents, businesses, NPOs/NGOs and local recycling companies. It is important to understand that the issues of a dirty town and neighbourhood are directly linked to and are deep-rooted to human behaviour."

"It is KwaDukuza residents that are responsible for all the litter and illegal dumping that is all over the Municipal area of jurisdiction, the circle starts with one individual who decides to throw and dispose waste in areas that are not designated for dumping, it starts with an individual who dumps litter on pavement instead of safely putting it a refuse bins that are provided in every single street in town."

"Let us put an end to this inhuman behaviour and restore the dignity of this town. Which is a gem in terms of tourism, no other coastal town can boast being home to Africa's first Nobel Peace Prize Laurette or the harem to a phenomenal King. His Majesty King Shaka Zulu." Concluded Her Worship, Cllr. Govender.
