Local Tonykart Youngsters Excel At SA National

Local Tonykart Youngsters Excel At SA National

Date: 2014-03-28
The opening round of the four round 2014 SA Karting Nationals was a sizzler in every way.  In temperatures exceeding 30C, the country?s top drivers converged on the Celso Scribante short course circuit in Port Elizabeth in the first combined series event in the challenge for the 2014 SA Championship title and ultimately a seat at the World Finals.  This proved extremely popular with 120 entrants for the various classes, which resulted in fierce and exciting competition, creating an electric atmosphere.

Local lads Dominic Lincoln and Benjamin Habig competed in the event.  This was Dominic?s first encounter at national level at the PE circuit, competing in the Mini Rok class for drivers 8 - 12 years, finishing 12th from a starting field of 21 drivers. Dominic is now only in his second year of competitive racing, and completed the KZN regional championship in 2013,as well as participating in a number of events in the Northern Regions (Vereeniging).

The biggest and most competitive class of the day was the DD2 gearbox class, with two youngsters making their debut, Bradley Liebenberg and Benjamin Habig.  Benjamin who turns 16 in May found himself lining up in a field of 25, among some of the most experienced drivers in the country.  After qualifying 4th and recording the fastest lap times for 9 of the 15 lap 1st heat, Tonykart?s Habig finished 2nd in heat 1.  Heat 2 was a bumper basher from start to finish, and Habig moved from 3rd to 7th.  Starting from 5th on the grid in the final heat Benjamin surprised the competition by leading the event for ten of the 15 lap heat before a tussle with Mitchell Licen for first place, ended in Eugene Britz sneaking past for the win, with Habig 2nd.  This gave Habig a 2nd overall on the podium and rocketed him into 2nd on the 2014 SA Championship.

Round 2 will be held in Cape Town on 25 and 26 April.  Lincoln attends Ashton Junior College and Habig is a Form 3 student at Ashton Senior College.
