All we want for Christmas is for people to give the amazing gift of life

All we want for Christmas is for people to give the amazing gift of life

Date: 2012-12-12
Jamie-Lee Caple and Kyle Skidmore have one thing in common. They both had to rely on the kindness of strangers to give them the amazing gift of life. When asked what their wishes were for Christmas, they responded, "Please become a registered donor. It only takes 5 minutes of your time and a small blood sample to register as a donor and you may be the person who could save someone's life. You don't even have to know the patient to sign up, we have never met our donor matches. They shared a little bit of their time to give us the opportunity to create a lifetime of new memories".

The Sunflower Fund is the only organisation that builds the South African Bone Marrow Registry. The chances of finding a donor match are 1:100 000 within your ethnic group. The more donors on the Registry the more hope a patient has of finding their donor match. The Sunflower Fund's toll free number (0800 12 10 82) is closed between the 14th December 2012 and the 14th January 2013. If you are interested in becoming a donor for any patient with leukaemia or a life threatening blood disorder, please contact The Sunflower Fund in the New Year. For more information on becoming a donor visit https://www.sunflowerfund.org.za

It only takes two test tubes of blood to become a donor and if you are a successful match only additional white blood cells are removed and donated to the patient, there is no surgery involved. It costs The Sunflower Fund R2 000 to tissue type each blood sample to the required level which is why fundraising is as important as recruiting healthy, committed and caring donors.

A big thank you to all the corporate sponsors and to those who attended an event, sponsored a prize, became a donor or participated in the Miles4Marrow campaign. The Sunflower Fund in KwaZulu Natal has raised a record amount since their inception six years ago. Thank you to everyone who made this possible by 'Sharing a Little to Save a Life'.

Should you wish to make a much needed financial donation to The Sunflower Fund, please reference it KZN donation.
