Davey braves the Amazon alone

Davey braves the Amazon alone

Date: 2012-05-02
KZN surfer, Davey du Plessis (24) has changed his focus from surfing to living dangerously in aid of conservation. Davey's passion is to bring attention to the fact that conservation as a whole must be taken seriously by humanity as all creatures from the smallest insect to the big rhino's have to stand a chance of survival in order for our eco-system to remain in balance.

Davey will be embarking on a solo three stage journey which includes a hike up the 18 000 ft Mt Msimi mountain, a 1000km cycle along the Apurimac tributary and then a 5700 km paddle down the Amazon. One of his biggest challenges will be the locals as well as insects and of course snakes. He will be taking the bare essentials along - his bike, canoe, tent and video equipment. He will be documenting his journey alone.

Davey has recently come back from a trip where he cycled from Cairo to South Africa. This is where he got the idea of focusing his next adventure on the plight of the Amazon rainforest. He plans to start his journey at the beginning of July and it will take around four to six months.

He said "I am really passionate about conserving the planet and I hope that by bringing attention to the destruction of the rain forests in the Amazon that people will start to pay more attention to all aspects of conservation. I will be updating my website https://www.worldwonderer.co.za as often as is possible in the jungle. Thanks to everyone for the encouragement this is going to be an exciting challenge". Davey has certainly earned our respect and we wish him a safe and successful journey.
