The Corona JBay Open is coming

The Corona JBay Open is coming

Date: 2019-05-31

JBay - the Corona JBay Open, South Africa's only World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) event is fast approaching, and the best competitive surfers in the world are starting to make their respective moves for the 2019 world title race. The Corona JBay Open is a pivotal event, coming in mid-way through the year-long tour, and a win in JBay could very easily set a competitor up for a world title going into the back half of the year.

Currently rated sixth on the Jeep Leaderboard - the rankings board for the Men's Championship Tour - Durban-born Jordy Smith is looking like a very strong contender for a big result in JBay. Jordy has been in serious focus for 18 months now, working on fitness, diet and technique, in a serious bid for a world title, and his form is evident that he has what it takes to secure a win in JBay.

In Shoalhaven Heads Beach, Shoalhaven NSW/ AUS, this past weekend saw Dakoda Walters (Angourie, NSW) and Molly Picklum (Shelly Beach, NSW) adding another stellar result to their already massive 2019 campaigns, both taking out the Hydralyte Sports Shoalhaven Pro Junior.

Also this past weekend in Keramas, Bali, Indonesia, Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) and Kanoa Igarashi (JPN) won the Corona Bali Protected, the third stop on the 2019 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT). Hosted at Keramas, one of the world's most high-performance waves, the Final Series concluded in the best conditions of the event's holding period with clean six-to-eight foot (1.8 - 2.4 metre) waves on offer. Gilmore charged through the pumping surf to take her 30th CT victory, while Japan's Igarashi captured his first.

Winter swells are here and there is lots of surf out there.
